Reflections on the Pitt EM Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
3 year program with a heavy prehospital emphasis, teaching opportunities, and a variety of clinical sites

What are the strengths of the Pitt EM program?
Variety of clinical sites, autonomous but with enough supervision, length of shifts,  balance between ED and off service rotations

Tell us about your residency classmates! How long did it take to connect?
We had a GroupMe conversation started within an hour of matching and talked all summer. We all knew each other pretty well before orientation even started

What has surprised you most about Pitt?
How down to earth and great at teaching the attendings are!

About Pitt EM and Pittsburgh

What do you like best about living in Pittsburgh/Western PA?
Cost of living! It is much more affordable than other major cities. In addition, it has the perks of a big city (professional sports, restaurants, museums, events and concerts) but lots of green space, parks, and less hectic areas

Where did you choose to live, and why?
The North Hills (more suburban) since my fiancée and I wanted a bigger place and a yard for our dog. It’s a 15 minute commute to downtown, but we have loved it so far. I lived in Shadyside during medical school and really enjoyed all the restaurants and bars there, I just wanted a change of pace.

What advice would you give to incoming residents about moving to the 'Burgh?
Explore all the neighborhoods and become a sports fan!
