Andrew Smith, MD (He/Him)

  • PGY-3

How much variety you see at each hospital, and how each department you work in flows and operates differently. While initially this was challenging to adapt to, I feel it has made me more versatile and comfortable within my ability to handle different specialties and personalities.

Reflections on the Pitt EM Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
Happy residents, easygoing attendings, and an environment that supported a learning environment which provided a large number and variety of patients.

What are the strengths of the Pitt EM program?
Volume and variety of patients, multiple EDs with excellent attendings, and camaraderie amongst residents.

Tell us about your residency classmates! How long did it take to connect?
Instantly. We were already chatting prior to moving to Pittsburgh. A lot of us have similar interests and enjoy getting together to talk about work and life.

What has surprised you most about UPMC/Pitt?
How much variety you see at each hospital, and how each department you work in flows and operates differently. While initially this was challenging to adapt to, I feel it has made me more versatile and comfortable within my ability to handle different specialties and personalities.

About Pitt EM and Pittsburgh

What do you like best about living in Pittsburgh/Western PA?
Midwestern vibes with plenty of bars, restaurants, parks, and rivers. Nothing is ever too far away, and each neighborhood has its own unique traits.

Where did you choose to live, and why?
Southside-close proximity to Mercy, Presby, and Magee. I found fair prices for what I was looking for in an apartment.

Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to incoming applicants about moving to the 'Burgh?
I would suggest exploring places to live in each neighborhood to get a feel for the vibe of the area. Certain areas are closer to parks, while others have a more bar/restaurant scene.
