I was surprised by how different the patient populations were at each emergency department within our system. I feel like between our three main sites, we see just about everything. I think the biggest benefit to having multiple sites is we really get comfortable with a wide range of patient presentations.

Reflections on the Pitt EM Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
The biggest thing for me was being at a program where I could become as strong as a clinician as possible. After rotating here as a medical student, I found the attendings to be excellent teachers and very engaged in resident education. They are extremely approachable and fun to work with.
What are the strengths of the Pitt EM program?
I think we get great clinical training and exposure to critically ill patients in our emergency department. I think the thing that sets us apart from our programs is our prehospital and toxicology opportunities.
Tell us about your residency classmates! How long did it take to connect?
We have a very solid group. I like being in a program with a large residency class. The nice thing about emergency medicine is there is always a handful of people not working on any given day. It is really easy to get a group together when you are not working. Still not so sure about that Chris Soufleris guy!

About Pitt EM and Pittsburgh
What do you like best about living in Pittsburgh/Western PA?
Having lived almost my entire life in Southeast Michigan, it was important to me to move somewhere new. I also wanted to live in a larger city. Pittsburgh is a fun city that has a lot offer.
Where did you choose to live, and why?
I lived in Shadyside for about 6 months and then moved to Lawrenceville and I've been there since. I have found it to be a fun place to live! It is a good location in terms of commute and a lot of other residents live nearby.
What advice would you give to incoming residents about moving to the 'Burgh?
I think it is important to get a sense of what the different neighborhoods are like. No matter where you live within the city, the commute will be easy to all of the hospitals, however, each neighborhood is very unique!
