Academic program with a great reputation, all the subspecialties to learn from, high acuity, diverse patient population and 3 years. Added bonus that we have a ridiculously awesome EMS experience built into our training, the residents are bomb and I really love the faculty.

What are your career goals?
Community vs. EMS/academic
What did you do the summer before internship?
I tried to get as much Florida life in as possible. Golf, mimosas by the pool with girlfriends and hanging out with my husband and family. We had planned a large family vacation to Tokyo but COVID.
What do you like to do outside of medicine?
Hangout with my husband and baby, golf, wake surf, binge Netflix series (current fav: workin’ moms) and go to the gym.
Reflections on the Pitt EM Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
Academic program with a great reputation, all the subspecialties to learn from, high acuity, diverse patient population and 3 years.

Tell us about your residency classmates! How long did it take to connect?
I love my classmates! We are a very supportive program and it definitely feels like everyone has each others’ back. September month intern year was when we really got to hangout the most due to COVID, so I was really glad our didactic month was built in when it was.
About Pitt EM and Pittsburgh
What do you like best about living in Pittsburgh/Western PA?
The Fall weather and the sports town feel.
Where did you choose to live, and why?
Shadyside. I wanted a house vibe in a neighborhood where I could take my baby on pretty walks but still walk to food, coffee and shopping as well as an easy drive to all the hospitals (and target).
Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to incoming applicants about moving to the 'Burgh?
It might be a bit different with virtual interviews, but if you feel something special with a program go with your gut. When you know, you know. If you chose a program based on how happy you think you’d be there, rather than whatever other factors we find ourselves focusing on as highly successful people, your time working as long and hard as you’re going to be will be significantly easier.
