Having a young child in residency is hard enough, so I was looking for a family friendly residency that would still give me excellent training. Additionally I couples matched with my wife and UPMC has had several successful couples in their program. My EMS background also made it a necessity to have a strong prehospital component to the program.

Something with EMS!

I like to fix things around the house (and regularly get compliments from residents on my tool belt). I also enjoy cooking and spending time with my toddler.
Reflections on the Pitt EM Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
Having a young child in residency is hard enough, so I was looking for a family friendly residency that would still give me excellent training. Additionally I couples matched with my wife and UPMC has had several successful couples in their program. My EMS background also made it a necessity to have a strong prehospital component to the program.
What are the strengths of the Pitt EM program?
They provide a very strong but also comprehensive experience. We work in multiple EDs regularly and experience quaternary, safety net, community, children’s specialty and even women’s specialty emergency departments.
Tell us about your residency classmates! How long did it take to connect?
The residents are a group of very smart, very odd people from a wide variety of backgrounds. We have a “we are all in this together” mentality which is very supportive.
What has surprised you most about UPMC/Pitt?
Having gone to medical school here, I knew what I was getting into. UPMC is a huge entity which has some drawbacks for sure but also provides experiences that you can’t get anywhere else.
About Pitt EM and Pittsburgh
What do you like best about living in Pittsburgh/Western PA?
Pittsburgh is a good sized city with good food and activities but isn’t like Philadelphia.
Where did you choose to live, and why?
I live in the North part of the city. The commute is easier and there is a little more breathing room.
Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to incoming applicants about moving to the 'Burgh?
I wish applicants could experience Pittsburgh and our program in person. It’s a unique city and the people here are fantastic. The attendings are amazing, the relationship with ancillary staff and nursing is positive, and our didactically are taught by experts. All things you can’t see from afar.
