"Caring excellence is at our core, and we strive to serve each other and those in need."

-- Donald M. Yealy, MD, FACEP, Distinguished Professor and UPMC Endowed Chair of Emergency Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh

For over 40 years, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine has been at the top of academic departments in the country. Caring excellence is at our core – serving each other and those in need. We train current and future leaders in acute care and medicine; these include excellent clinicians, investigators, organizational presidents, text and journal editors, department chairs, deans, senior health system and governmental leaders across the country and globe.

In addition to attracting and helping develop the best people, we also create the new insights to improve understanding and care. We conduct novel research across many topics, remain consistently funded and represented in the best scientific platforms, and help implement those advances with partners around the US and the world.  We continue to live our mission: improving acute care while creating and sharing the knowledge and ability to do this better, everywhere.
