Alexis Steinberg, MD, MS, is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh with secondary appointments in the Departments of Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Dr. Steinberg is a neurointensivist at UPMC and attends on the University of Pittsburgh Post-Cardiac Arrest Service.
Dr. Steinberg is a physician-scientist focused on improving outcomes of patients with acute neurological illness and disorders of consciousness. Her work has confirmed that the process of neurological prognostication is common, imprecise, variable and may result in many preventable deaths. Therefore, she studies physicians' cognitive approach to neurologic prognostication after acute injury with a focus on anoxic brain injury. Dr. Steinberg's goal is to develop interventions to improve prognostication, which will prevent both the inappropriate withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies in recoverable cases and futile care in cases where recovery is impossible.
Dr. Steinberg completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University before earning her medical degree at the Technion Institute of Technology. She completed her residency in neurology and fellowship in neurocritical care at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the faculty.
