David Barton

Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine

David Barton, MD, MS, FACEP, FAWM, is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and an emergency physician at UPMC. He received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University before earning his medical degree and masters degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his residency in emergency medicine and fellowship in emergency care research at the University of Pittsburgh.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Barton is a physician-scientist focused on identifying blood-based biomarkers and imaging biomarkers of traumatic brain injury (TBI), with the goal to advance understanding of TBI pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.  His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the Emergency Medicine Foundation. He has presented his research nationally and internationally.  Dr. Barton has additional sub-specialty interests and experience in wilderness medicine and prehospital emergency medical services.
