Joe Suyama, MD, FACEP, is a professor and vice chair of career development in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine. He serves as advisory dean in the Office of Student Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Suyama is an emergency physician at UPMC, chief of emergency services at UPMC Magee-Womens, and medical branch director for the UPMC Corporate Emergency Coordination Center.
Dr. Suyama conducts research on the health and safety of first responders and on obstetrical and medical conditions affecting women with high-risk psychosocial, behavioral, and medical profiles. Within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Suyama has encouraged the growth and implementation of disaster training and education for medical students by coordinating and establishing courses dealing with emerging infectious diseases, the medical consequences of complex emergencies, hospital pandemic response, Basic Disaster Life Support, and advanced clinical skills for disaster response.
Dr. Suyama completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania before earning his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati before returning to Pitt Med as faculty.
